Torenstraat 22, 9163 HE Nes, Netherlands

Ameland is one of the West Frisian Islands and is located off the Netherlands' north coast. A great way to explore the island is by bike; head to the candy-striped lighthouse on the island's west side to climb the 240 steps, learn of Ameland's rural communities at Juttersmuseum Swartwoude, and explore the village of Hollum to discover some of the island's listed national monuments and houses.

The island has two windmills - one's located in Nes, the other in Hollum. Hollum is also home to the De Verwachting grain and mustard mill, which produces and sells local mustard. Meanwhile, Nes is home to an 1880 grain mill, which is still used today as a local bakery.
